Takeaway in Monaghan
Takeaways are the least glamorous thing on this site and the most used. They outlast most restaurants in a town this size, because their overheads are lower and their trade is local rather than passing. Monaghan has the full range you would expect and it is all within a short walk of the four squares.
Where they are
Two streets carry most of it. Glaslough Street, running north out of the Diamond, and Dublin Street, running south. Between them you are covering nearly everything, and from the middle of town you are five minutes from either. Market Street has one or two as well. Nothing here requires a car.
The range
The traditional chipper is the Monte Carlo on Glaslough Street, which is the answer if what you want is fish and chips rather than a menu.
Slice of Italy, also on Glaslough Street, does pizza to sit in or take out.
For Chinese, Hakka does collection and delivery in the town.
For Indian, Monaghan Spice on Dublin Street does sit in as well as takeaway, and Eastern Balti on Market Street does takeaway and delivery.
Beyond that there is the usual run of fast food and pizza, and a few of the restaurants and pubs will box up what they cook. The Sunday night problem
This is the practical reason the page exists. Monaghan kitchens close early. Restaurant service in a border town winds down well before it would in a city, hotel kitchens stop, and Sunday is the worst night of the week for it. After about eight on a Sunday, a takeaway is often the only thing in the town still cooking.
If you are arriving late, coming off the last bus from Dublin, or driving back down from the north, do not assume you will find a restaurant. Assume you will find a takeaway, and be pleased if you are wrong. The same goes for a bank holiday Monday.
The other side of that is that the takeaways run later than everything else on a Friday and Saturday, which is when the queues happen and when they are effectively an extension of the pubs.
Delivery
Some deliver themselves and some do not, and coverage is the town and its immediate edges rather than the county. If you are staying out at Glaslough or on one of the country roads, check whether they will come to you before you order. Getting a taxi to collect a curry costs more than the curry.
On naming names
Takeaways change hands quietly. There is rarely an announcement, the shop stays shut for a fortnight and reopens under a different name doing much the same food. Only the places with a website or a live social page are named above, and even those should be checked before you make a trip for one.
