Monaghantown.ie is an independent guide to Monaghan town. It is not run by Monaghan County Council, it is not run by the former Monaghan Town Council or Monaghan Municipal District, and nothing published here is official.
If you are looking for council services, go to monaghan.ie. That covers planning, housing, roads, motor tax, waste, council meetings, councillor contacts, public notices and everything else the council does. If you followed an old link here expecting one of those, that is where it now lives.
For tourism across the county, monaghantourism.com is the official tourism site.
Why the old links come here
This domain was the website of Monaghan Town Council and later Monaghan Municipal District. It went through several versions over about twenty years, changed address structure twice, and eventually lapsed after local government reorganisation folded the town council into the county council.
A lot of pages elsewhere on the web still link to those old addresses. Rather than leave every one of them broken, the old URLs now point at the closest equivalent page here, and the handful of pages that carried real traffic have been rebuilt at their original addresses. That is why an address ending in .asp, or one with community2 in the middle of it, still works.
Council business that used to live here has not been reproduced, because it would be wrong to publish council material on a site the council does not control, and because it would be out of date within a month. Those addresses redirect to the front page instead.
What is here
Ten pages covering the practical things a visitor or a new resident asks about: where to stay, what to do, where to eat, schools, community groups, sport, how to get here, and the town’s history.
The aim is that everything on it is specific and true. Where a business or a school is named, it was trading or open when the page was written and it has a website you can check. There are no opening hours or phone numbers on the site, deliberately, because those go out of date faster than anything else and a guide full of wrong numbers is worse than no guide.
Each page carries the date its details were last checked at the foot of it.
Links to other sites
Some pages link to other sites we run, specifically houseprice.ie for property prices, trips.ie for travel around the county, and headstart.ie for school and childcare listings. Those are the only commercial links on the site and they are marked here so you know. Everything else links out to the business, school or organisation being described, and we take nothing for those.
Corrections
If something here is wrong, out of date or unfair to a business, it should be fixed. The site is small enough that corrections are easy to make.
